Flame Retardant Refrigeration

Consumers told to stop buying ‘fire-risk’ fridges

Is your fridge a fire risk? Watchdog warns nearly half of homes have potentially deadly appliance

How this simple flaw could make your fridge a death trap

You may have noticed these headlines circulating this week – and although they sound very alarming, there is nothing to be worried about.

Consumer watchdog Which? has recommended that consumers should only buy refrigeration which has a flame retardant backing. As the name suggests, this backing prevents flames from spreading to other areas of the kitchen, should the appliance catch fire.

It’s important to mention here that current UK regulations do not require all fridges, freezers and fridge-freezers to have a flame retardant backing – this is because the risk of a fridge catching fire is so small. If you have an appliance without a flame retardant backing don’t worry, these appliances are not unsafe to use or have in your home.

All Which? are doing is recommending that when you do decide to change your fridge or freezer, you should choose one with a flame retardant backing.

To help you figure out which appliances have a flame retardant backing, we’ve grouped them all the ones we sell together for you here.
